No-Nonsense Tips For Hiring A Flooring Contractor

By: Alex Gwen Thomson

If you're planning to redo the flooring in your home, this is a real estate investment! The condition of your home's interior not only affects your daily life, it also affects the sell-ability of your home, should you ever decide to move. Even if you aren't planning to sell in the near future, you should hire a flooring contractor that will not steer your wrong.

Here are some tips on hiring the right contractor for the job.

First off, you should look at the credentials of the potential contractor. Does he (or she) work for a major company in your area that does home renovations? Or, at least, has he (or she) had any experience in the past? Even if your contractor is an independent one, your flooring quality will be somewhat hinged on the work experience of those who put the floor in.

It is critical that you don't just let anybody do your floors. If budget is an issue, obviously it is ok not to hire the big name company in your area to do the work. If you select this option, bear in mind that you will have to make some sacrifices.

Usually, independent flooring contractors are a little slower to finish the job. It may take weeks instead of being done all at once. These individuals often don't have more than maybe one partner to help them with the work (and sometimes no partner at all) so it only makes sense that they wouldn't be able to work as quickly as the corporate flooring company in your area.

Whether you choose an independent contractor or a flooring company, you should ask the potential contractor to do a free consultation, wherein he or she sits down with you and maps out the plans. They should also be able to show you samples of the types of flooring that are available, the price per piece and the cost of parts for the entire job. The labor costs also must be disclosed.

After the initial consultation, you should know what your floor could look like and how much it will cost at the end of the completed job. You should also have a contract (hence the term contractor) that shows these fees. The contract should also mention when the job will be started and completed. This way, if they fail to finish, you are not legally accountable to pay them in full.

Always read through your contract thoroughly and have an open discussion about what contingencies will be in place should something go wrong. What if your contractor gets sick? What if you need the flooring done because of a special dinner party coming up? Make sure all of these things are discussed and everything is above board.

Any contractor that gets uptight about your questions, acts dodgy or gets defensive is not likely a person of integrity. They are probably acting this way because they are exactly the type of person you should NOT hire. If they are comfortable with the questions and have valid answers, they are more likely to be trustworthy!

Trust is the primary element that should be in place when you select a flooring contractor. Your home is your biggest investment and you should revere it as such (which means making good decisions when you renovate). Hiring the right flooring contractor is one of the wisest things you can do to ensure the quality of your home interior.
